Production & Release:

“Victoria Beckham” (stylised and popularly known as “VB”) is the self-titled debut and only album by Victoria Beckham, the last Spice Girl to release a solo album. It was released on 1st October 2001 by Virgin Records. “Not Such An Innocent Girl” was thought to be the title of the album, but Victoria decided to change it because she was married and mom, so the title didn’t fit her very well. She started to work on the lyrics in 1999 and finish the album on August 2001. Beckham took the time to produce it cause she wanted enjoy life as a housewife.

Victoria recorded about 20 songs for the album, and had to choose 11 for the final tracklist. That’s the main reason why the hit “Out Of Your Mind” was cut off, because she didn’t want to lose another track and just prefered to release her newest work. Producer Biffco confirmed, on his Instagram Stories in November 2018, that worked in about 8-9 songs for Victoria’s debut album, all songs scrapped.

Sales & Chart:

The album spawned two singles, “Not Such an Innocent Girl” and “A Mind of Its Own” which managed to reach the top ten in the United Kingdom. The album, though received mixed to negative reviews, became a commercial success after it debuted and peaked at number ten in the UK Albums Chart, charting for 3 weeks and selling 16,000 copies in its first week.

However, the album has only sold 52,016 copies overall in the UK, much lower than any other Spice solo album at the time, while costing 3 million pounds (over $4.25 million) to record. After Being Victoria Beckham, an official documentary that aired in March 2002, the album re-entered the UK Albums Chart at number sixty-seven.

In June 2002, after months of speculation, it has confirmed that Victoria has parted company with her record company. But a spokesperson for the performer said: “No-one has been dropped. The Virgin deal has come to a natural end and both parties have decided not to continue.”

Tour:

“Victoria Beckham” promotion was basically only with TV performances. In 2002, itv1 broadcast the documental Being Victoria Beckham, that helped the album being re-entered in the UK Albums Chart. Victoria also did a pocket show in G.A.Y. performing the songs from the album.
