I Want You Back (Mel B’s Song)

“I Want You Back” is a song from Mel B and her debut solo single

Lyrics:

[Mel B:] I’m the M to the E-L-B you know me
[Missy:] I’m the M-I-S-S-Y, with an E
[Mel B:] And I’ve got flows from overseas
[Missy:] Well, how can you beep-beep with no keys?
[Mel B:] I’ve got spice. I’m tight with my flows
[Missy:] And all my flows have been known to go blow
[Mel B:] Well let me hit this one before I go
[Missy:] Well I’ll let you go if you say so

Boy I’m sick of you
Who me? Yes me. Yeah you know I’m a fool,
Oooh I’m a fool for you
Cauce I keep takin’ you back as though I’m stupid like that
Yeah yeah you know we’re through
But I can’t say no and I never said no
Why I can’t say no to you, becauce you treat
me so wack and fact I want you back

[Chorus:]
I think I want you back
Your love has made a deep impact
I know it might sound wack
But damn I think I want you back,
Want you
I think I want you back
Your love has made a deep impact
I know it might sound wack
But damn I think I want you,
Want you back

Boy I’m tired of you
Runnin’ over me tellin’ me what to do
Now what have I done to you
To make you sex a lot I though I made you hot
Now don’t make me act a fool
I know I talk mad junk but I know what I want
What I truly want is you
And even though you’re a mack true dat I
want you back

I think I want you back (Want you back)
Your love has made a deep impact (Impact)
I know it might sound wack (Sound wack)
But damn I think I want you back,
Want you
I think I want you back
Your love has made a deep impact
I know it might sound wack (Sound wack)
But damn I think I want you,
Want you

You got me losin’ my mind, my mind
You can’t keep breakin’ my heart
You got me drinkin’ liquor in the mornin’
Sittin’ all night at the bar
Aw!

I think I want you back
Your love has made a deep impact (So what? So what?)
I know it might sound wack
But damn I think I want you back,
Want you
I think I want you back
Your love has made a deep impact (So what? Uh!)
I know it might sound wack
But damn I think I want you,
Want you back

I think I want you back
Your love has made a deep impact
I know it might sound wack
But damn I think I want you back,
Want you
I think I want you back
Your love has made a deep impact
I know it might sound wack
But damn I think I want you,
Want you back

[Soundtrack Version:]

Look right, all I been saying is
I want you back, I want you back, I want you back
And I do…
Well, I think I do
I think I did
Wait a minute, let me seriously think about it
F**k no!
I don’t want you back at all!
You go your own way, I got my
I’m out of here!
See ya!

Mister Lonely, uh, uh huh, lemme
Break it down

Background:

Melanie B recalled, “This was the first time I’d even considered doing anything by myself. I was on tour with the Spice Girls when Missy (Elliott) called me up and said ‘Melanie, I’ve got a song for you, will you come and record it with me?’ I checked it with the girls and within a month I was out there, I recorded it in a day, did the video, then came back. She’s a genius!”

The song was recorded between 21-23 June 1998. Missy finished her demo vocals on 23 June, as she showed in a Twitter post.

The video was directed by Hype Williams when Melanie was pregnant. The video uses the radio edit version of the song and the cover for the single is a still from the music video. The video starts with Melanie and Missy singing the intro and as the first verse starts, Melanie is seen with her husband as she smacks, hits and teases him. In the second verse Melanie is seen crawling on a table to meet her husband at the end for more teasing, wearing Gene Simmons-esque make-up. As the bridge comes on, Melanie is seen in a cage with her husband high in the air. Shots of Melanie, Missy and people dancing are seen as the video ends.
