Blame It On Me

“Blame It On Me” is a song from Melanie C and second single from her eight album

Lyrics:

Makeup running down my cheeks
Lying here in disbelief
Blinded me so easily
You’re messing with my energy

Don’t really know just how to feel
Like I loved a you that wasn’t real
We went from friends to enemies
Haunted by the memories

Turns out you were the poison
Said I’m hearing voices
Said it’s paranoia
Now I know your poison
Can you hear the voices
Filled with paranoia

Why don’t you just blame it on me again
Wide awake but you’re sound asleep again
If it works for you then I’ll take the heat again
Running outta people you can call your friend
So why don’t you just blame it on me

(Why don’t you just blame it on)
(Why don’t you just blame it on)

Now it is so clear to see
Your dark and twisted fantasies
Only liked me when I’m weak
Trying to be my remedy

Turns out you were the poison
Said I’m hearing voices
Said it’s paranoia
Now I know your poison
Can you hear the voices
Filled with paranoia

Why don’t you just blame it on me again
Wide awake but you’re sound asleep again
If it works for you then I’ll take the heat again
Running outta people you can call your friend
So why don’t you just blame it on me

(Why don’t you just blame it on)
(Why don’t you just blame it on)

Why don’t you just blame it on me again
Wide awake but you’re sound asleep again
If it works for you then I’ll take the heat again
Running outta people you can call your friend
So why don’t you just blame it on me

(Why don’t you just blame it, blame it, blame it, blame it)
(Blame it on me)

So why don’t you just blame it on me

“Blame It On Me” music video was directed by Sylvie Weber. The song and its video were released on the 27th of May 2020.

The video starts with a woman working at her office job. In between spreadsheets and files, the office worker turns to a Mortal Kombat-inspired video game on her computer where Melanie C is one of the characters. At first, the pop star is defeated by her opponent Sam. When the office worker abandons her desk, however, a Bonus Stage ensues in a setting that looks just like the gray-toned office. Melanie C has a huge comeback, winning the rounds as the rest of the workers gather around the computer to watch.

The song has several “easter eggs” with both Spice Girls and Melanie C songs, used as special fight combos: “My Strongest Suit”, “Go!”, “Protected”, “You’ll Get Yours”, “Who Do You Think You Are”, “Right Back At Ya”, “Here It Comes Again”, “Stop”, “Too Much”, “2 Become 1”, , “Move Over”, “Get Out Of Here”, ,  “Your Mistake”, “Goin’ Down”, “Goodbye”, “Never Be The Same Again”, “Weak”, “Never Say Never”, “Stupid Game”

Background:

The single title and cover first leaked on May 13, 2020, forcing Melanie C Team to contact fans to put down the photo and any information about the single. During her #AskMelanieCLive YouTube Live Q&A, Melanie did a commotional speach, explaining the hard consequences that a leak can do to a independent artist like her, and ask fans to notified her team. She said: “The reason being (so upsetting), everything that I doing, take’s a lot of plan, a lot of campaign, and if things is revealed before we are ready to do that, it can impact other areas. I know your exciting, but if is leak it, please don’t share on social media, because I don’t want you to get something that I’m not ready, it’s not ready, because the quality of my working is so important to me, that if something is out there prematuring can be really, really damaging, because I’m not with a major label, I don’t have a huge marketing campaign, I can’t release my album next week, cos’ is not ready, so please for me, if something is leaked, keep it to your hand and let us know “.

Talking about the coronavirus worldwide pandemia, Melanie C explained, “It didn’t feel appropriate for me to try to sell something right now, but the fans have been waiting for a song for ages and I love it. I’m so proud of it. I’m so excited about my new music and don’t want it to disappear without a trace, which it could very well do in this situation.”

“Blame It on Me” is a disco and house-infused song that sees the pop star overcoming a toxic relationship.
